Peninsula’s ‘Levante LNG’ Positions Algeciras as a Hub for Maritime Decarbonisation.

This article, published by Enagás on 22 November, highlights the transformative impact of the Levante LNG project in advancing sustainable maritime transport and reducing emissions in southern Spain and Strait of Gibraltar.

The Levante LNG bunker vessel began operations in September 2023, sourcing LNG from Enagas regasification plants, primarily in Huelva. With a capacity of 12,500m³, it has become the most active LNG supply vessel in southern Spain and Strait of Gibraltar this year and is the only one of its kind operating in Andalucia. It is 50% owned, chartered and commercially operated under exclusivity by Peninsula, a global leader in sustainable bunkering solutions.

The Levante LNG project is a result of an initiative from the Autoridad Portuaria Bahía de Algeciras – Port of Algeciras to improve air quality in the port and its surrounding areas, it was driven by Enagás through its subsidiary Scale Gas and Peninsula.

The project included the construction and operation of the Levante LNG, a liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering vessel, and is co-funded by the European Union’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) programme.
